Sidra works closely with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar and Hamad Medical Corporation across all three activities to raise the standard of health and health care throughout the State of Qatar.

Department:The Research department will house several hundred researchers working on many aspects of Feto-maternal health. It will cover Basic, Translation, Clinical trials and Informatics research. The Dept. comprises two research floors totaling 10,000Mand 9 smaller “satellite laboratories” throughout the hospital. The department will house basic laboratories as well as state of the art core facilities, e.g. Genomics, medicinal chemistry and Imaging.
Person:The Research Assistant - Bioinformatics within the Biomedical Informatics division is involved in designing/developing/implementing/ annotating and carrying scientific research to address Bioinformatics challenges.  The Research Assistant, under the supervision of Principal Investigator and/or research scientist executes several tasks such as programming and implementing bioinformatics pipeline, testing and validating new tools and running pilot analysis. The Research Assistant also executes several tasks such as NGS data analysis especially variants annotation, medical genetic database mining and preparation of final report to clinical geneticist. The incumbent is also involved in performing advanced analysis of  Omics data especially Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). S/he adheres to the best standards of software development for business and scientific applications.
Key Role Accountabilities:
  • Programming and implementing bioinformatics pipeline

  • Testing and validating new tools

  • Running pilot analysis.

  • Performing advanced analysis of  Omics data especially Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)

  • Analyzing and processing biomedical data

  • Programs and implements bioinformatics pipeline

  • Tests and validates new tools

  • Runs pilot analysis and performs advanced analysis of  Omics data especially Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)

  • Conducts bioinformatics analysis on genomics data

  • Analyzes and processes biomedical data

  • Collaborates with other Sidra members to apply the results of research and/or develop new techniques or practices

  • Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues

  • Adheres to Sidra’s standards as they appear in the Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest policies

 

In view of the evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra during this pre-operational phase, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills – Selection Criteria:

 

ESSENTIAL

PREFERRED

Education

MS degree in bioinformatics or related field, or

BS with 3+ years of relevant experience

MS degree in bioinformatics with 5+ years of NGS data analysis experience

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in a UNIX environment

     

  • Experience and knowledge of Whole Genome Re-sequencing, Exome Sequencing, Transcriptome analysis and small RNA sequencing analysis

     

  • Experience of developing and maintaining SOPs for bioinformatics analysis and facilitation of regulatory preparation of the genome center operation

     

  • Extensive experience and broad foundational understanding of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

     

  • Knowledge and experience in genetic and genomics wet bench experiments

     

  • Experience in technical support and training of non-bioinformatics collaborative colleagues
  • Experience in research and/or academic settings

     

  • Experience in implementing algorithms, developing software

     

  • Ability to perform multi-threaded programs

     

  • Strong background in molecular biology

     

  • Any experience in next-generation sequencing analysis will be valued

  • Strong programming skills: Python, Perl, C++, Java, R, Matlab or other related programming knowledge.

     

  • Appropriate knowledge of ‘omics’ data manipulation

  • Knowledgeable in scientific research methods and evaluation of research results, and ability to develop and maintain own knowledge and skills at the forefront of field

     

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience in dynamic web development (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript)

     

  • Experience in JavaScript libraries such as jQuery, DataTables.js, D3.js, crossfilter, Dc.js, underscore.js, backbone.js, react, bio.js, Bootstrap
