The INCa-Synergie Lyon Cancer Foundation ( is located in a major French comprehensive cancer center (Centre Leon Berard). It is in close proximity with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is affiliated with the Rhône-Alpes Bioinformatics Federation (PRABI,, a node of the French Bioinformatics Institute. Thus, the facility benefits both from biomedical and bioinformatics environments.

Centre Leon Berard has been awarded funds from INCa to develop one of the first two Comprehensive Clinical Research Center on cancer in France. This 5-years project, called LYRIC, aims notably to empower the biomedical teams working in the field of cancer to best exploit the data generated through large scale clinical, immunology, and genomic studies. Due to the very large volumes of heterogeneous data which will be generated, a high performance storage database need to be developed.


Working in a team of experienced bioinformaticians and with the supervision of a senior database architect, the candidate should:

- Have a high level of technical competency in software engineering, database design and administration.
- Bring his/her expertise in managing data to specific requests from the collaborating research groups.
- Bring his/her expertise in providing high-level and user-friendly interfaces.
- Contribute to the integration of applications and tools for data visualisation (genome browser, virtual slides, data visualization using R-packages).


2.1 Education
Advanced university degree (Masters, PhD) in computer science or bioinformatics.

2.2 Skills
Modelling schemes for databases (entity-association models, UML) and associated programs.
Design and development of databases for the management and analysis of large
heterogeneous data sets.
Implementation and optimization of relational database management systems
(PostgresSQL and/or MySQL).
Significant experience tuning SQL and PL/SQL to ensure optimal performance
Skills in at least one Object-Oriented programming (J2EE, C++, PHP) web languages (Ajax, JavaScript, XML, HTML) and scripting experience, Perl preferred.
Unix experience.

2.3 Professional experience

Quality candidate must be able to design, document, and deliver a solution from start to finish. Candidate must be an excellent communicator who is self-motivated in delivering timely, efficient, and effective results without a need for heavy supervision.

Consequently, at least three years of relevant professional experience in the field of database development is required.

2.4 Complementary information

Communication in French is not required but may be an advantage. Both fluent written and spoken English is mandatory; excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The candidate should be self-motivated, capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists and be able to deliver a quality product with fixed deadlines.


3.1 Contract:

Permanent position (after a 4 month try period) will be offered to the successful candidate. Starting date will depend on availability of the successful candidate.
It may be as early as February 1st, 2012.
