2 phD positions in mathematical and systems biology

We are offering 2 phD positions in mathematical and systems biology at the University of Montpellier, France, funded under the U Chicago-CNRS Collaboration program and LabMuse EPIGENMED training network. The students will be trained in two interdisciplinary training networks involving four labs in Montpellier and one lab at the University of Chicago. Our research combines mathematical modelling and cutting-edge biological experiments to understand the impact of stochastic fluctuations in two relevant problems in HIV-1 infection and developmental biology.

NETDIV: NETwork modelling for the bioDIVersity of species communities

Assessing and understanding patterns among species communities for their management and conservation is a crucial issue worldwide given the increasing human pressure and global environmental changes. Yet, further improvements are still needed to provide efficient methodological frameworks to assess the complexity of communities (compositional, taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity), and to identify underlying species assembly processes and anthropogenic conditions at different spatio-temporal scales.

Modélisation de la variation antigénique dans le paludisme chronique

Le paludisme chronique asymptomatique est un défi majeur pour les programmes d’éradication de la malaria. P. falciparum, le parasite responsable du paludisme, utilise la variation antigénique de l’expression de protéines codées par des gènes var pour échapper au système immunitaire de l'hôte. Ce mécanisme rend possible les formes asymptomatiques de paludisme. Bien que ce mécanisme d’infection soit proposé depuis longtemps, les modèles mathématiques existants ont des difficultés à concilier les taux de commutation rapide des gènes var et l'infection chronique à long terme.
