Description

Job description

The bioinformatics laboratory of the research center of the CHU de Québec - Université Laval (CHUL) invites applications for a Bioinformatician position. This full-time fixed term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. The Bioinformatician will report directly to Arnaud Droit, principal investigator and director of the computational biology laboratory.

The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team focused on developing and applying computational methods in various other OMICs-type projects, including cancer research, microbial metagenomics or proteomics. The team uses state-of-the-art methods to analyse high throughput sequencing to analyze patient cohorts and identify biomarker signatures that could potentially serve as diagnostic markers. These methods include standard bioinformatics protocols, but also more advanced approaches relying on machine learning and deep learning.

The position will take place in a context of an international collaboration with a private partner. It will start as soon as possible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • Keep a technological watch in scientific literature
  • Propose new activities or new tools to test
  • Prepares software packages (including source code, help documents/wikis, and web or GUI interfaces) for public dissemination
  • Providing basic assistance to users in pipeline execution and interpretation of results.
  • Provides bioinformatics support and training to research staff and trainees with varying computer science backgrounds

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Msc or PhD in a relevant area (Computer science, Bioinformatics)
  • Understanding of concepts and principles of molecular biology and next-generation sequencing
  • Practiced understanding of how to develop bioinformatics pipelines
  • Experience with microbiome bioinformatic analysis tools
  • Knowledge of R and Python
  • Fluency with Unix
  • Experience with data management and dataset manipulation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (fluency in French or English is necessary)
