Description

The research laboratory of Dr. Kateryna Makova in the Department of Biology at The Pennsylvania State
University has openings for Postdoctoral Fellows to study mammalian genome evolution. Candidates with
interest in mammalian Y chromosome evolution, the role of non-B DNA in evolution, and/or in the analysis of
mutations are particularly encouraged to apply. A PhD in Biology or a related field is required, and experience
in the analysis of next-generation sequencing data, whole-genome alignments, and assemblies is preferred.
Candidates should be familiar with computational biology techniques and scientific programming basics. Prior
experience with cloud or high-performance computing is a bonus. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for
one year from the date of hire, with excellent possibility of refunding.
The successful candidate will join an established dynamic group with a strong record of funding and
publications (https://www.bx.psu.edu/makova_lab/). The candidate will work in a highly collaborative
interdisciplinary environment and will have an opportunity to validate their computational findings in an
experimental laboratory. We are part of the Center for Medical Genomics (cmg.psu.edu) and the Center for
Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (ccbb.psu.edu). We have strong links with Penn State Medical
School and computational biologists from the Galaxy team (http://galaxyproject.org). Penn State is a vibrant
scientific community with strengths in bioinformatics, computational genomics, statistics, molecular evolution,
and population genetics. Our location in State College, Pennsylvania, is known for excellent schools, affordable
living, and numerous opportunities for outdoor activities.
The starting date is flexible, with an earlier date preferred. Interested applicants should send a pdf with a CV, a
statement of research interests, and contact information of three referees to Kateryna Makova
(kdm16@psu.edu), indicating “Postdoctoral Fellow” in the subject line. Dr. Makova can also be contacted for
any questions about this position. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until a suitable
position is filled.
Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.
Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity and the diversity of its workforce.
