Description
Team overview
The Exposome, Heredity, Cancer, and Health team (directed by Gianluca Severi and Alexis Elbaz) at INSERM-CESP (https://cesp.inserm.fr/fr) investigates how the exposome, that encompasses individual factors such as health-related behaviors and lifestyle, occupational and environmental exposures, and biological characteristics interact with the genetic background to influence the occurrence and progression of common diseases such as cancer, cardio-metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. This research program is based on data from different large cohorts including the E3N-Generations cohort, the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Nutrition and Cancer) cohort, the UK Biobank and other case-control studies.
Main mission
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Exposome, Heredity, Cancer and Health team. In collaboration with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the successful candidate will contribute to several projects aiming to understand the role of the metabolome in cancer risk, using data from large population-based cohorts.
The successful candidate will work on targeted and/or untargeted metabolomics data from large prospective cohorts such as the cohort (EPIC) and the E3N-Generations, with the aim to:
- Identify metabolic profiles linked to key lifestyle exposures (e.g. red meat, alcohol) and cancer risk (e.g., colorectal, pancreatic, thyroid, …)
- Integrate exposure and metabolomics data to assess mediation in the relationship between lifestyle/environmental factors and cancer
To this end, the candidate will be required to perform multivariate statistical analyses as well as epidemiological models on high-dimensional data.
The selected candidate will work within a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics.
Key activities
- Conduct statistical analysis and interpret high-dimensional omics data
- Prepare scientific manuscripts, reports, and contribute to follow-up grant proposals
- Present findings at national and international scientific conference
Required qualifications
- PhD in a relevant field (e.g. biostatistics, epidemiology, bioinformatics).
- Proficiency in both written and oral scientific English
- The candidate should be able to independently conduct analyses using R
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience with metabolomics data
- Experience working with large epidemiological datasets (e.g. EPIC, UK Biobank)
- Interest in causal inference or integrative -omics approaches
Required qualities
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment (epidemiology, genomics, informatics, etc.)
- Autonomy, organization, and methodological rigor
- Analytical and synthesis skills, clear oral and written communication
Remuneration and contract
Contract: 12-month fixed-term, renewable
Salary: according to INSERM salary scales and experiences
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Interested candidates should send their application, including a cover letter (in French or English), a detailed CV and names and contact details of two referees, by email to gianluca.severi@inserm.fr and therese.truong@inserm.fr before the 30th of June 2025.
