Code of conduct
SFBI strives to maintain an environment in which science and scientific careers can flourish through respectful, inclusive and fair treatment of and is committed to providing a safe place for its members and non-member participants. By principle, SFBI rejects all forms of discrimination and harassment based on factors such as ethnic or national origin, gender identity, disability, physical appearance, age
appearance, religion, citizenship, language, political opinion or economic class. In addition, SFBI is opposed to all forms of intimidation, including threatening, humiliating, coercive or intimidating behavior that harms, hinders or sabotages scientific activities and careers. Discrimination, harassment (in any forms) and intimidation create a hostile environment that reduces the quality, integrity and pace of scientific progress by marginalizing individuals and communities. It also undermines productivity and career advancement, and prevents a healthy exchange of ideas.
All participants, speakers, sponsors and volunteers of JOBIM or SFBI-funded events are required to comply with this code. The organizers will apply this code throughout the conference to ensure a safe environment for all.
This code applies within the confines of the conference as well as during all conference-related activities (including events and on all social networks).
Participants agree to:
- Show consideration in their speech and actions, and respect the limits of other participants
- Refrain from any behavior or speech that is degrading, discriminatory or harassing. Harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Stalking
- Deliberate intimidation
- Unwanted photographing or recording
- Producing discriminatory images or text
- Prolonged or deliberate disruption of presentations or other
- events
- Use of sexual or discriminatory images, comments or jokes
- Offensive comments relating to sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, height, ethnic origin or religion
- Inappropriate physical contact (including non-consensual physical contact)
- Notify a member of the organization or the SFBI if they notice a dangerous situation, a person in distress or a breach of this code of conduct, even if it seems insignificant.
Participants who engage in acts of harassment may be penalized in any way the organizers deem appropriate. Participants may receive a formal warning to stop the behavior and be expelled if they continue, or be immediately expelled from the conference without refund. Depending on its gravity, the incident may be reported to the participant's employer. In addition, if the harassing behavior is part of a presentation (oral, poster or other), the presentation may be stopped (or withdrawn for a stand or poster) in addition to the sanctions listed above.
A warning of harassment must lead to an immediate halt to the inappropriate behavior, even if it was intended to be friendly or humorous in nature.
