formations universitaires (REBIF)

Since 2016, teacher-researchers and researchers involved in and responsible for academic training in bioinformatics have wanted to get together to list and discuss the training courses on offer in France. The ‘Rencontre autour de l'Enseignement en BioInformatique en France’ (REBIF) is organized under the auspices of the SFBI and the IFB.

One of REBIF's actions is to draw up an exhaustive list of degree courses in bioinformatics at all levels (DUT, Licences, Masters, Engineering, DU), in the form of standardized training sheets, with keywords to characterize each course and thus facilitate student orientation. These information sheets, presenting the current landscape of training courses and their specific features, as well as a map of France, will be published on the SFBI website, and will complement the listing maintained by the Jeunes Bioinformaticiens de France (JeBiF) association (https://jebif.fr/fr/bioinformatique/les-formations/ - Map from Rebif edition #2 - 2018)

2016 - First REBIF

The first edition took place from 30 to 31 May 2016. The aim of this edition was to set up the first catalogue of bioinformatics training courses in France. It was organised and run by Alban MANCHERON (University of Montpellier), Morgane THOMAS-CHOLLIER (SFBI, École normale supérieure), Jacques VAN HELDEN (University of Aix-Marseille), Céline BROCHIER (University of Lyon) and Sophie SCHBATH (SFBI) with the support of the SFBI, the IFB and the Computer Science Department of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Montpellier. The first network of diploma courses in Bioinformatics was born.

2018 - Second edition of REBIF and the IFB, educational support

Two years after the first edition of REBIF, SFBI once again brought together those involved in training leading to a degree in Bioinformatics, to enable them to exchange ideas and create a genuine training network. The event was organized and hosted by Morgane THOMAS-CHOLLIER (SFBI, École normale supérieure), Stéphane LE CROM (École normale supérieure) and Jacques VAN HELDEN (Université d'Aix-Marseille), with the support of SFBI and IFB. This second edition took place from 31 May to 1 June 2018 in Massy, welcoming around thirty people (more than 20 training courses will be represented).

This edition was coupled with the ‘Reunion autour des Métiers de la Bionformatique’ (MetBIF), which took place the previous day. An overview of the range of occupations and professional skills was presented, with a view to comparing them with the skills to be acquired. Two workshops were proposed, one on a common set of bioinformatics skills, and the other on teaching good professional practice. Lastly, the Meet-U teaching unit was presented, to highlight cross-training teaching initiatives.

For future students, the training landscape is still rather vague, and it is not easy for them to orientate themselves towards the training most suited to their profiles. The poster presented, including the map of training courses and their key words, as well as the main conclusions of the workshops, will provide an overview of French training courses in bioinformatics.
